Clark Kent wird von dem vom Fieberwahn geschüttelten Kurx angegriffen. Während des Kampfes bricht Kurx zusammen und Superman bringt ihn in die Festung der Einsamkeit. Dort stellen sie fest, daß der Ausserirdische vollkommen geheilt ist. Er zeigt dem Stählernen ein Abbild des Verursachers seines Fiebers. Vartox hat ihn benutzt um durch die Energietoxine bei seinem Fieberanfall seine eigenen Kräfte zu erneuern. Dadurch verwirrte sich der Geist von Vartox allerdings und er hält Superman für den Schuldigen.
