Superman #6
Superman (Interpresse, 1965 series) #6, cover-dated March 1966, is a representative artifact of how Silver Age DC superhero comics reached Scandinavian and Benelux readers during the mid-1960s boom — reprinted in black and white, with translated captions, for an audience encountering these characters largely for the first time in their native-language format. The issue's two source stories are creatively significant in their own right: the World's Finest Comics #153 lead feature is the very first 'Imaginary Story' published in that title, centering on a young Bruce Wayne who wrongly blames Superboy for his father Thomas Wayne's death and grows up to become Batman as an act of revenge — a story that later achieved unexpected cultural afterlife when one of its pages became one of the most widely circulated comic-book memes of the internet era. The Toyman backup, drawn from Superman #182, offered European readers an early encounter with Winslow Schott, a Silver Age villain who would go on to a long presence in the Superman mythos across comics, animation, and live-action television.

Interpresse was a Danish publisher that launched its Superman reprint series in October 1965, licensing Silver Age DC material for the Scandinavian and Benelux markets; the Belgian branch, opened in 1965, co-published French and Flemish editions in cooperation with regional partners. The sixth issue, dated March 1966, reprinted material edited by Mort Weisinger at DC — the dominant architect of the Silver Age Superman universe — and reproduced both stories in black and white, a common cost-saving format for European reprint editions of the era. The series was part of a broader Interpresse strategy of translating American superhero comics that would eventually extend to dozens of DC and Marvel titles across multiple European territories.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Published March 1966 by Interpresse as issue #6 of their Superman reprint series (GCD catalogs it under the '1965 series,' which launched in October 1965).
- Interior stories reprinted in black and white, standard practice for Interpresse's mid-1960s DC reprint line.
- Lead story reprinted from World's Finest Comics #153 (DC, on-sale September 9, 1965): an 'Imaginary Story' in which young Bruce Wayne — convinced Superboy killed his father Thomas Wayne — grows up to become Batman seeking revenge and ultimately allies with Lex Luthor against Superman. GCD notes this as the first Imaginary Story published in World's Finest Comics.
- The World's Finest #153 story features Batman [Bruce Wayne], Superman [Clark Kent/Kal-El], Robin [Dick Grayson], Lex Luthor, and Thomas Wayne; it was edited by Mort Weisinger with E. Nelson Bridwell as uncredited assistant editor.
- A panel from the World's Finest #153 source story — depicting Batman slapping Robin — later became one of the most widely shared comic-book-panel internet memes.
- Second story reprinted from Superman (DC) #182, featuring Superman vs. The Toyman (Winslow Schott) as the villain; art attribution was debated among GCD researchers, with Al Plastino ultimately credited on the Superman figure.
- Interpresse started its Belgian branch in 1965 and collaborated with French publisher Sagédition from 1967 onward; this issue predates that Franco-Belgian arrangement, placing it in the earliest phase of the Superman reprint program.
- The same World's Finest #153 and Superman #182 source stories were reprinted contemporaneously in Norwegian (Serieforlaget) and Swedish (Centerförlaget) editions, reflecting a coordinated Scandinavian licensing strategy for DC's Silver Age output.
