Superman Annual #1

Part of DC Universe Rebirth, this 2017 annual brings extra-sized storytelling to the Superman title from the creative team of Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Jorge Jiménez, and Alejandro Sánchez. The cover — illustrated by Jiménez — is a visceral low-angle composition: a battered Superman strains upward with fist raised, his cape whipping in the wind, while massive gnarled roots and tendrils coil around him with glowing red eyes lurking within the twisted mass below. With a story titled "Tangled Up in Green," that entangling, organic threat on the cover feels like a very deliberate promise of things to come.
