“L'homme éternel”

In "L'homme éternel," Superman journeys to the World War II era to confront Vandal Savage, whose grip on Earth One stems from ancient manipulations tied to a prophecy in Sumer. Written by Marv Wolfman and brought to life with Curt Swan’s iconic art, Frank Chiaramonte’s inks, and Gene D’Angelo’s colors, this 1982 issue blends time-travel intrigue with a chilling alternate history. Rich Buckler and Dick Giordano deliver a striking cover that captures the stakes of a world where one immortal’s ambition reshaped reality.

Superman travels to the World War II era to track down Vandal Savage. Lex Luthor reveals how things came to be that Vandal Savage rules the world. The story involves a seer in ancient Sumer telling Savage that he could be a great ruler on Earth One. So Savage planted special "time bombs" to alter the past, making him ruler. Jimmy goes to the past to help Superman, not knowing that Luthor plans to take over. Superman is able to stop the sequence of events that will lead to Vandal Savage's rule, and everything returns to normal.
