“Welcome to My School”

"Welcome to My School" is a chilling tale from Tales of Horror #12 (1954), a standout issue drawn with eerie precision by Ellis Eringer, whose distinctive art brings the story’s dark fable to life. When a humble Tuscany peasant named Alberto Gasperi makes a fateful pact with a forest witch, his hunger for power spirals into a nightmare of his own making—set against the stark, haunting landscape of Mount Everest. The cover, a striking collaboration by Myron Fass, captures the story’s grim, otherworldly tone.

Alberto Gasperi, a Tuscany peasant, longs to be the highest man on Earth. One day he meets a witch out in the forest who becomes captivated by him for she has never seen a man before. Alberto exploits this by having her perform black magic on the rich king. After Alberto is captured, the witch gives up her powers to save him. Alberto kills the hideous witch who is of no use to him anymore. The other witches in the coven exact revenge by granting Alberto's fondest wish. They make him the highest man on Earth by chaining him to the top of Mount Everest for all eternity.
