"Diamond in the Rough" follows a narrator who became fascinated by a rough, brutish man called "the Bruiser" after knowing him in high school, though she was secretly afraid of him. Years later, she encounters him at a nightclub where he aggressively pursues her, leading her to flee. The narrator then becomes involved with a refined man named Steve who offers her a job in the city through his influential father, but Steve's friend Clara attempts to sabotage their relationship out of jealousy. After Clara's interference nearly succeeds, the narrator ultimately chooses to return to her rural roots rather than remain with Steve in the city.
