Teen Confessions #13
In "Infatuation," a poignant 1961 Charlton comic, young soda parlor worker Sally finds herself drawn to quiet, shy college student Peter—though he’s ten years her junior. When Peter’s parents react to their budding romance, he retreats into silence, then resolves to abandon college and marry Sally, only to be heartbroken when she pretends to love her boss Toby to protect his future. Written by Joe Gill and brought to life with tender detail by Joe Sinnott (pencils) and Vince Colletta (inks), this emotional story captures a moment of raw, bittersweet longing. The cover, also by Sinnott and Colletta, perfectly frames the quiet ache at the story’s core.

Sally works in a “soda parlor” in a college town. She falls in love with quiet, shy student Peter, although he’s ten years younger than her. Peter informs his parents about the “uneducated, working girl” he wants to marry; afterwards, he refuses to tell Sally what they said. He decides to quit college, get a job, and marry Sally. Sally realizes she’d be ruining Peter’s future, so she pretends not to care for him and claims she loves her boss Toby. This drives Peter away, and Sally is left with “empty nothingness that rips my heart so I could scream.”
