About this Issue

Teen Titans: Endless Winter Special #1 carries its greatest historical weight as the first appearance of Summer Zahid, a cryokinetic metahuman whose Metagene was activated by the Frost King's assault on New York — she would go on to enroll at Teen Titans Academy and become a recurring figure in that title's roster. Beyond the debut, the issue functions as a deliberate narrative hinge between two distinct eras of the Titans franchise: it closes out the post-Damian, rudderless chapter of the modern team and openly seeds the premise of Teen Titans Academy, with Donna Troy and Beast Boy stepping in as mentors and modeling the school-of-hard-knocks philosophy that would define the subsequent series. As the sixth chapter of DC's nine-part 'Endless Winter' crossover, it also illustrates how event tie-in specials can do double duty — servicing an ongoing event while quietly relaunching a franchise's direction under new creative stewardship.

History

The issue was written by Andy Lanning and Ron Marz, who handled the full 'Endless Winter' crossover together, with pencils split between Jesús Merino (main story) and Marco Santucci (flashback sequences), inked by Cam Smith, colored by Hi-Fi (main) and Arif Prianto (flashback), and lettered by Rob Leigh and Troy Peteri. It was edited by Mike Cotton under group editor Alex R. Carr, with Bob Harras serving as Editor-in-Chief. The issue was produced as a one-shot tie-in special slotted specifically into the Teen Titans corner of the 'Endless Winter' event — itself a nine-issue crossover running across multiple DC titles in late 2020 and early 2021 — and its cover date of February 2021 belied its actual on-sale date of December 15, 2020, in time for the holiday season the story dramatizes.
