Tex pursues the thieves through the Badlands, deducing from a slow-burning fuse that the bandits are using explosives to create a diversion. While searching for the culprits, Tex encounters a stranger claiming to be a prairie ranger investigating murders in the area; the stranger reveals he was tracking an outlaw named Clint Morgan for identification purposes. Tex discovers the "stranger" is actually Pete Miller, and after sorting out the confusion, the two join forces to track down the killers responsible for the murders and recover the stolen totem.
