The Amazing Spider-Man #266
In "Jump for My Love or Spring Is in the Air," Peter David and Sal Buscema deliver a surprisingly heartfelt moment as Spider-Man intervenes to stop Toad from taking his own life—only to be met with an unexpected request to become his sidekick. When Toad’s clumsy attempt to prove himself backfires, a rogue gang attack brings together a trio of unlikely heroes: Toad, Frog-Man, and Spider-Kid, who bond over their shared outsider status and form the Misfits. Denys Cowan’s dynamic cover captures the chaos, while the story’s mix of humor and sincerity shines through in the art by Buscema and inks by Rubinstein.

Spider-Man saves Toad from committing suicide, and Toad decides to try to become his sidekick. Spider-Man blows him off until the next day, and Toad recruits a gang of thugs to attack Spider-Man so he can show his worth to the web slinger. Frog-Man gets wise to the plot and shows up to help out. So does Spider-Kid. Finding a point of commonality amongst themselves, Toad, Frog-Man and Spider-Kid decide to become a new super team: the Misfits. Shaking his head in disbelief, Spider-Man is all too happy to simply walk away from the ludicrous situation.
