The Amazing Spider-Man #78
In "The Night of the Prowler!", Peter Parker’s evening takes a turn when he finds Gwen seemingly on a date with Flash, while Hobie Brown, frustrated at work, secretly transforms into the masked Prowler—determined to prove himself a hero by robbing a newspaper and returning the money as a regular man. As Peter, still reeling from the misunderstanding, stumbles upon the Prowler in the act, the situation spirals when J. Jonah Jameson catches him red-handed in front of an empty safe. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by John Buscema with inks by Jim Mooney, this 1969 issue features a cover by John Romita, who also penciled the iconic image of Spider-Man’s first encounter with the Prowler.

Peter tries to see Gwen only to find that she is (apparently) on a date with Flash. Hobie approaches his boss with ideas for new safety devices for his job as window-washer, only to be rebuffed. He implements them in private, adds a cloak and a mask, and thus creates The Prowler. Hobie plans to rob a newspaper as the Prowler then return the money as Hobie, making himself a hero. Naturally Peter (as Peter) discovers the Prowler in the act and J. Jonah discovers Peter in front of an empty safe.
