Mussolini builds the first modern fascist movement in Italy. He brutalizes opposition, and sends soldiers to fight in Ethiopia and Spain, then allies with Hitler and attacks Italian Jews. Numerous anti-Mussolini groups form, but some are crushed and others have to fight from abroad. After Mussolini's ouster in 1943 a large armed resistance fights the remaining fascists and the occupying Germans.
