The Avengers #52
Avengers #52 delivers two landmark events in a single 20-page story: the first appearance of the Grim Reaper (Eric Williams), one of the Avengers' most persistent recurring antagonists, and the formal induction of T'Challa/Black Panther into the team's active roster — making him one of Marvel's earliest Black members of a flagship superhero team. Writer Roy Thomas ingeniously used the debut to draw a direct narrative thread back to the sacrificial death of Wonder Man in Avengers #9, demonstrating the long-form continuity craft that would define his tenure on the title. The issue also established the Williams brothers' sibling dynamic, a relationship whose repercussions — from the Vision's brain-wave origins to decades of death-and-resurrection stories — echoed through Avengers continuity for over fifty years.

By May 1968, Roy Thomas had been writing the series since 1966 and John Buscema had settled in as primary penciler from issue #41 onward, giving the book a bolder, more cinematic visual style than its predecessors. Stan Lee edited the issue, and Vince Colletta provided inks with lettering by Sam Rosen. Thomas's conception of the Grim Reaper was rooted in his affection for continuity: he resurrected an obscure plot point from Avengers #9 — the death of Wonder Man — and spun it into a new villain driven by personal grief rather than world domination. Notably, this issue also saw Thomas briefly rename T'Challa as simply 'Panther' in the story's text, reportedly reflecting editorial unease about the name's association with the Black Panther political movement; the full name was subsequently restored.
