“The Thunder of the Chariots!”

In "The Thunder of the Chariots!", the young squire Brian, son of a fallen knight, must prove himself in a world where honor is tested by steel and shadow. Trained harshly by the gruff Sir Grot and haunted by a fierce hawk named Slasher, Brian stumbles into the Forest Perilous and discovers a suit of armor bearing a hawk emblem—just as he's drawn into a confrontation with would-be knights. Wearing the armor in silence, he defends a girl from attackers, vanishing into legend as the mysterious Silent Knight. The story is written by Robert Kanigher and illustrated by Irv Novick, with lettering by Gaspar Saladino. The cover, a dynamic collaboration by Russ Heath, Joe Kubert, and Irv Novick, captures the drama of the armored figure in the midst of peril.

Sir Edwin Kent dies in a joust because Sir Oswald Bane sabotaged his lance. His son Brian, an orphan, cannot take the throne until he's a knight. Tough Sir Grot trains the boy relentlessly, but no one can handle the hawk Slasher. Squire Brian chases the hawk into the Forest Perilous and finds a suit of armor with a hawk emblem. He dons it just as knights try to seize a girl. Keeping silent lest he's exposed (as a mere squire, not a knight), he drives them off with Slasher's help. He leaves the suit hanging and finds everyone in the castle talks about the mysterious Silent Knight!
