In the aftermath of the war, Tex Thompson—back from Europe and aiming for a political future—sets out to forge a new hero to counter the rising Soviet threat, bypassing Al Pratt in favor of the reclusive former Dan the Dyna-Mite. Meanwhile, Paul Kirk, returning from abroad tormented by visions, finds himself pursued by forces he can’t yet understand, as the past begins to catch up with him. Written by James Robinson and illustrated by Paul Martin Smith, this issue—“2”—delivers a tense, character-driven story of legacy, identity, and the weight of history, with cover art by Paul Smith.

After the war, as most costumed heroes settle into private lives, Tex Thompson returns from Europe to begin a political career and makes plans to create a super-hero to defend against the Soviet threat. After Al Pratt is deemed unsuitable, Thompson seeks out the former Dan the Dyna-Mite for the job. Meanwhile, Paul Kirk returns from Europe haunted by his dreams, and is now the man being hunted.
