The Incredible Hulk #143
In "Sanctuary!", Bruce Banner finds himself in a desperate chase from the authorities—only to be rescued by an unexpected ally: Doctor Doom, who spirits him away to the Latverian embassy. When General Ross arrives demanding Banner’s surrender, Doom unleashes a lifelike Hulk robot, leading the military to believe the threat has been neutralized. But as Bruce grapples with the irony of being saved by his archenemy, Doom takes him captive, using his "subliminal inducer" to manipulate both Banner and the Hulk. Written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Dick Ayers with inks by John Severin, the cover by Herb Trimpe captures the tension of this pivotal moment. A 15-cent comic from 1971, this issue marks a bold new chapter in the Hulk’s saga.

As Bruce is being pursued by the police, he is picked up by Dr. Doom's limo and taken to the Latverian embassy. When Ross and his contingent of soldiers show up to ask Doom to relinquish his guest, he releases a Hulk robot instead. The army quickly destroys the robot, thinking they have done away with the real thing; Bruce bristles at the thought of having Doom as his savior so the villain gasses him and takes him back to Latveria. Doom uses his "subliminal inducer" on Banner, hoping to make both he and his monstrous alter-ego his willing servants.
