“Countdown Abomination [Part 1]”

In "Countdown Abomination [Part 1]," a desperate race against time begins when scientist Phil Stearns poisons janitor Bruce Banner with a lethal compound set to kill him in sixteen hours—though Banner remains unaware. When the Abomination arrives at a nuclear testing site and confronts the seemingly powerless Banner, he inadvertently triggers a daytime transformation into the Hulk with a blast of gamma radiation. The resulting clash is brutal, with the Hulk unleashing a torrent of toxic chemicals that leave Abomination severely disfigured. As the fight rages, the Hulk begins to suffer from the effects of Stearns' poison, pushing him to the brink. Written by Peter David and illustrated by Jeff Purves, with inks by Marie Severin, colors by Glynis Oliver, and letters by Joe Rosen, this pivotal issue features a cover by Walter Simonson, whose dynamic pencils and inks capture the intensity of the confrontation.

Scientist Phil Stearns tags janitor Bruce Banner with a deadly poison that is going to kill him in sixteen hours. Unfortunately, Bruce has no idea that this has happened. When Abomination arrives at the nuclear testing facility and has only puny Banner to fight, he zaps Bruce with gamma radiation making him change into the Hulk during the day. This turns out to be a really bad move as the Hulk pours toxic chemicals on Blonsky, severely disfiguring him. The Hulk apparently suffers a heart attack thanks to Stearns' poison.
