Fighting separately and for their own purposes, the Kanes and the House of Life each attack Set, now revealed to have possessed Amos. Empowered by Isis, Sadie transports them all to Washington, D.C., where they discover that Apophis, the Chaos Serpent, is taking advantage of the conflict to reenter the world. Using Set's secret name Sadie stops him and drives Apophis back. The apparent death of Zia reveals that she is a shabti double, giving Carter hope that the real Zia yet lives.
