The Maxx #1
The Maxx #1 (March 1993) launched one of the most psychologically ambitious series to emerge from the early Image Comics era, introducing a homeless man who oscillates between a gritty urban reality and a mythic alternate dimension called the Outback — a structure that used superhero trappings to explore trauma, identity, and the nature of the subconscious in ways virtually unheard of in mainstream comics at the time. The debut issue delivered the first appearances of the series' core cast — the Maxx, social worker Julie Winters, the villainous Mr. Gone, and the eyeless Outback predators known as the Isz — setting in motion a 35-issue meditation on cycles of abuse and psychological healing that grew into a genuine cult phenomenon. Its success was broad enough to earn a 13-episode animated adaptation on MTV in 1995, making it one of only a handful of early Image titles to cross over into mainstream pop culture. Sam Kieth's deeply personal, expressionistically distorted artwork — panels within panels, irregular layouts, anatomy deliberately stretched and warped for emotional effect — also marked the series as a watershed demonstration of what a creator-owned Image book could look and feel like.

Sam Kieth left Marvel Comics in 1993 — where he had built a following through visceral Wolverine work in Marvel Comics Presents and a stint penciling the earliest issues of Neil Gaiman's Sandman — to create The Maxx as an independent title under the Image Comics umbrella. Notably, The Maxx was not tied to any of Image's six founding imprints, making it one of the publisher's earliest truly standalone creator-owned series. William Messner-Loebs co-scripted the book through issue #15, freeing Kieth to focus on plotting and art; local Sacramento friend Jim Sinclair provided art assistance throughout the run. A prototype of the lead character, then called Max the Hare, had appeared as far back as Comico Primer #5 in 1983, but the modern Maxx — mask, claws, purple suit, and all — debuted in the pages published in March 1993.

- IDW Publishing remastered and republished the entire 35-issue run as The Maxx: Maxximized (beginning November 2013), featuring new coloring overseen by Kieth; an Artist's Edition collecting original uncolored art from Darker Image #1 and issues #1–6 was also published.
- An audio drama adaptation, MAXXimum Sound: A Comic Book Soundtrack, based on the first three issues was released on audio cassette in 1993.
- A film adaptation was announced in November 2019 by Channing Tatum and producer Roy Lee, though no release has materialized as of this writing.
