“The Story of the Mishkin Murals”

In "The Story of the Mishkin Murals," Kim and Simon Deitch craft a haunting, intricately drawn tale of art, madness, and the blurred line between creator and creation. Dr. Reinman’s chilling account of cartoonist Ted Mishkin’s obsession with his fictional cat Waldo unfolds across surreal, meticulously rendered pages, leading to a haunting legacy that follows even after Mishkin’s confinement. The story’s unsettling atmosphere is matched by the Deitch brothers’ shared art and inks, with Kim Deitch’s distinctive cover capturing the eerie, dreamlike tone of the tale.

Dr. Reinman recounts the case of Ted Mishkin, a cartoonist who has a delusional relationship with one of his cartoon creations - a cat called Waldo. He thinks he has cured Ted, via shock therapy, only to find the delusion turns up yet again in Ted's nephew Nathan. Shortly after Nathan escapes the asylum, apparently with Waldo's help, Reinman retires, and winds up a patient himself.
