“The Historian”

In "The Historian," the Phantom pays an unannounced visit to his granddaughter Diana, only to find her grandfather trying to steer her toward more conventional suitors—much to the masked hero’s surprise. When Diana and her friend Bob face danger from grizzly bears, the Phantom steps in to save them, proving his worth in the most dramatic way. His actions ultimately convince Grandpa that the Phantom is the right man for Diana, a truth she’s quietly hoped for all along. Art by Bill Lignante and cover by George Wilson.

Appalled that his granddaughter loves a mysterious masked cave-dweller, Grandpa ushers a parade of eligible bachelors through her life -- which shocks the Phantom when he arrives unannounced for a visit. When Bob and Diana are attacked by grizzly bears while hunting, Bob valiantly defends her, but it's the Phantom who kills one bear and drives off another. He later captures two gunmen robbing the Palmers, convincing Grandpa that Diana's suitor is exactly what he should be -- which is what she's wanted all along.
