The Shadow catches a flight to the Republic of Barania to meet with its president. Carlos, the president's guard and assistant, escorts the Shadow into the president's chambers when he arrives. He soon learns that someone is trying to assassinate the president, shooting down airliners and bombing the president's country residence while he was away on a hunting trip. Carlos has been assigned to assist in the Shadow's investigation. Little does he know though that Carlos is the one responsible for the treasonous acts, something he will learn soon enough.
