The Shadow #4
Howard Chaykin's four-issue reinvention of The Shadow reaches its conclusion here, and the cover alone makes a strong case for why this mature-readers series turned heads in 1986. Against a deep purple cityscape of glittering lit windows, the Shadow looms in his trademark black hat and sweeping coat, both guns blazing with vivid orange muzzle flashes — a figure simultaneously timeless and sharply contemporary. It's a fitting send-off image for Chaykin's bold take on the pulp legend, with cover inks and pencils entirely his own.
