The Spirit #14
The Spirit and his assistant Ebony infiltrate a carnival where the criminal Muscles Magee is hiding, posing as the "Bloodless Man" attraction. After a confrontation with Inspector Dolan and Ebony getting knocked unconscious, the Spirit battles Muscles and his gang in a truck. The Spirit ultimately defeats Muscles with help from a phonograph and recorder that Ebony had won as a prize, leading to the arrest of Muscles and the carnival operators harboring the escaped convict.
The Spirit uncovers a criminal operation run by a character known as Alibi, who manufactures fake alibis for a price—and the detective soon discovers that Havery, one of his clients, has become the patsy in a deadly frame-up scheme. When the Spirit closes in on Alibi in a park confrontation, he finds himself targeted by a reverse alibi: evidence planted to make him look like a murderer. With help from an unexpected source, the Spirit must fight his way out of an elaborate trap before Alibi vanishes into the night.
The Spirit investigates a shot fired at the Kuttup Shop, a novelty store filled with joke merchandise and trick goods—only to find two cornered racketeers using the place as a hideout after a murder. With the shop's bizarre inventory at their fingertips and the law closing in, the Spirit must navigate a maze of fake gadgets and genuine danger to bring the criminals to justice.
In "Prominent Executives Vanish," the Spirit follows a trail of missing high-profile men linked to the Hotel Grant, where a seemingly innocent bellhop named Breezy offers assistance—only to reveal a dangerous secret beneath his cheerful demeanor.
In "The Masked Magician," the Spirit faces off against the cunning criminal Denzil, who uses real-life stage magic to outwit him and target Ellen. With sleight of hand and illusion, Denzil turns the city into a stage of deception—only for the Spirit to match him, one trick at a time.
When a society girl-turned-showgirl vanishes from an alley behind the Buxomo Theater, Commissioner Dolan and the Spirit follow a trail of clues through hidden passages and a disused subway, only to uncover a kidnapping plot with far darker stakes than anyone expected. As rival schemes collide and a tommy-gun situation spirals toward lethal violence, the Spirit must think fast to save Belle La Trivet and her father from ruthless racketeers. A sharp, fast-paced mystery that trades the glamour of high society for the grit of the city's forgotten corners.
