The Transformers #1 holds a singular place in comics history as the very first original fiction ever published featuring the Autobots and Decepticons — beating the animated series to newsstands by several months and establishing the foundational mythology of Cybertron, the Ark, and the robots-in-disguise concept that an entire franchise would build on for decades. Conceived by Marvel as a four-issue limited series tied to Hasbro's 1984 toy launch, its unexpected sales success transformed it into an ongoing monthly that ran 80 issues, spawned a parallel Marvel UK title, and seeded G1 continuity that IDW Publishing, Dreamwave, and others continued to revisit and expand well into the 21st century. The issue delivers the first comic-book appearances of Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Soundwave, Starscream, and roughly two dozen other Autobot and Decepticon characters, as well as the human leads Buster Witwicky and his father Sparkplug, whose garage-mechanic-and-son dynamic would anchor the early Marvel run. In late 1983, Hasbro approached Marvel Comics to develop a narrative mythology for a new line of transforming toy robots licensed from Takara. Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter laid out the basic concept and, with editor Denny O'Neil, generated early character work — O'Neil is credited with naming Optimus Prime. When much of the initial character material was rejected by Hasbro, revision duties fell to Bob Budiansky, a writer-penciller who had only recently been promoted to editor; working under a Thanksgiving-weekend deadline, he renamed and fleshed out the majority of the first wave of characters, including Megatron, Wheeljack, Sideswipe, and many others, and later wrote the character bios that appeared on toy packaging. The actual comic was written in standard Marvel style: Bill Mantlo provided the plot, Ralph Macchio delivered the finished script, Frank Springer pencilled, Kim DeMulder inked, Nelson Yomtov coloured, and Budiansky himself edited — with Jim Shooter as editor-in-chief. Launched with a September 1984 cover date (actual release: May 1984, per U.S. Copyright Office records), it was printed on higher-grade 'Mando paper' at a premium price point, an editorial signal that Marvel treated it as a prestige limited series from the start; demand quickly outpaced that framing, and the book became an ongoing by issue #5.
