The Uncanny X-Men #210
Uncanny X-Men #210 is the opening chapter of the Mutant Massacre, the first dedicated X-Men crossover event in Marvel history — a distinction that set the template for the line's annual tradition of multi-title event storytelling that persisted for decades. The issue delivers the shadowy cameo debut of the Marauders (Arclight, Harpoon, Riptide, Scalphunter, Scrambler, Vertigo) and the first appearance of the psychic possessor Malice, whose choker-around-the-neck visual immediately became one of Claremont's most unsettling storytelling devices. The Mutant Massacre storyline originated as a Chris Claremont solo arc for Uncanny X-Men, but X-Factor writer Louise Simonson persuaded Marvel editorial that the scope demanded a genuine multi-title crossover — the first of its kind for the X-line. Claremont and Simonson coordinated by exchanging typewritten plots and extensive phone calls to synchronize the interlocking timelines, a logistical challenge Simonson later described as 'horrible.' The issue was edited by Ann Nocenti under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, with John Romita Jr. on pencils and Dan Green on inks, and Romita Jr. is credited with designing the Marauders themselves. The original cover famously depicted Wolverine smoking a cigar — an image later digitally altered to remove the cigar when the cover was reused for a trade paperback collection.
