The War #3

Dec 1989 · Marvel · 3.50 USD; 4.75 CAD
“Retaliation”

In "Retaliation," the third issue of The War (1989), the world teeters on the edge of total annihilation as failed nuclear detonations leave the planet in chaos. With global powers scrambling—Cuban fleets advancing, U.S. forces mobilizing, and the Soviets poised to strike—psychic terror escalates as Keith Remsen manipulates Harlan Mook from beyond the veil of sleep. Meanwhile, the Star Child, sensing the tide of war, begins its return to Earth. Written by Doug Murray and illustrated by Tom Morgan (with cover art by Morgan), this high-stakes chapter blends geopolitical tension with supernatural dread in a story that refuses to let the world breathe.

All the nuclear missiles land on their targets, but fail to detonate. The paranormal force returns to the South African base, but Colonel Oort's troops attack them. The Cubans send a naval fleet to South Africa to take out the American force and President Voigt orders the U.S. Air Force to take out the Cubans. The Soviets see this as an opportunity to start World War III. Keith Remsen terrorizes Harlan Mook in his dreams goading Mook to attack him. Remsen shoots and kills Mook before Mook can explode. In outer space, the Star Child feels the impending war and decides to return to Earth.
