About this Issue

Thor: God of Thunder #12 is the hinge point of Jason Aaron's entire multi-year Thor saga — a deliberate cool-down issue titled 'Once Upon a Time in Midgard' that arrives immediately after the climactic eleven-issue God Butcher/Godbomb arc and uses its quieter register to plant two narrative seeds that would reshape the Thor universe for years. The first appearance of Roz Solomon, an environmental S.H.I.E.L.D. agent created by Aaron and artist Nic Klein, gave the series a recurring supporting figure whose anti-Roxxon environmentalist mission seeded the thematic core of the subsequent 'Last Days of Midgard' arc. More consequentially, the issue delivers the gut-punch revelation that Jane Foster has been diagnosed with breast cancer — a character beat that Aaron would cultivate across two full series until it became the emotional backbone of The Mighty Thor, one of Marvel's most celebrated runs of the 2010s.

History

Thor: God of Thunder launched as part of Marvel's 2012 Marvel NOW! initiative with writer Jason Aaron and series artist Esad Ribić, but issue #12 marks the first full interlude between major arcs, with interior art duties handed to Nic Klein while Ribić contributed the cover. The issue was published with an October 2013 cover date (released August 2013) and opens the trade paperback collection Thor: God of Thunder Vol. 3: The Accursed, which collects issues #12–18. It has since been reprinted multiple times, including in the Thor by Jason Aaron: The Complete Collection Vol. 1 (2019) and the Thor by Jason Aaron Omnibus Vol. 1 (2021).

Trivia · 7 facts

  • First appearance of Roz Solomon (Rosalind 'Roz' Solomon), an environmental S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and S.H.I.E.L.D. Environmental Investigation Team member, created by Jason Aaron and Nic Klein.
  • First appearance of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Environmental Investigation Team as a unit.
  • Contains the first revelation that Jane Foster has breast cancer — a diagnosis she is already aware of when Thor visits her; she refuses magical intervention, insisting on fighting the disease as a human being.
  • Titled 'Once Upon a Time in Midgard'; the issue functions as an interlude between the God Butcher/Godbomb arc (issues #1–11) and the Accursed arc (issues #13–18), depicting Thor's routine acts of compassion across Midgard.
  • Written by Jason Aaron with interior art by Nic Klein (not series regular Esad Ribić); Ribić provided the cover.
  • The issue features all three temporal iterations of Thor — Young Thor (893 A.D.), Avenger Thor (present day), and King Thor (far future) — continuing the structural conceit Aaron established in issue #1.
  • Reprinted in Thor: God of Thunder Vol. 3: The Accursed (2014), Thor by Jason Aaron: The Complete Collection Vol. 1 (2019), and Thor by Jason Aaron Omnibus Vol. 1 (2021).
