Tip Top Comics #3 (123)

Oct 1946 · United Feature Syndicate · 0.10 USD

In Tip Top Comics #3 (1946), Sad Sack’s homecoming takes a bittersweet turn when the cheers of a "Welcome Soldier" banner at the train station clash with the quiet emptiness of a world that’s moved on. With theaters, hotels, and canteens all closed, even the park bars him with a "Keep Off the Grass" sign—leaving him to sleep on the platform, wrapped in the very banner meant to welcome him. Written and illustrated by George Baker, this poignant slice of postwar life captures a moment of quiet isolation with a touch of wry humor.

Sad Sack returns to America to see a "Welcome Soldier" banner in the train station. However, the movie theater and hotel are full (because of all the returning soldiers) and the GI Canteen is closed (because the war is over). Even the park has a "Keep Off the Grass" sign. So Sack ends up sleeping on the train platform, using the "Welcome Soldier" banner as a blanket.
