Tom Mix undertakes a dangerous mission carrying a ten-thousand-dollar payroll for his ranch through the foothills, but encounters trouble when an outlaw named Varmint tries to intercept him. After a struggle in the brush, Tom falls and is knocked unconscious, but recovers to find the payroll missing. Tom deduces that the skipper will try to reach Dockville by river and sets out to intercept him there. Tom pursues the thief to a river, where he rescues a woman named Miss from drowning after the diamond he was supposed to deliver slips out of her shirt pocket into the water.
