Dan Slott moved directly from a decade-long run on Amazing Spider-Man to this book; by his own account, he lobbied for the assignment the moment he learned Brian Michael Bendis was departing Marvel for DC Comics. His original pitch framed the series as 'Robert Downey Jr. in the armor — except we're telling stories out of Black Mirror,' a concept approved under then-editor-in-chief Axel Alonso and carried forward when C.B. Cebulski took over the EIC role. Cebulski's public comments at announcement credited Slott's emotional approach to the character as the reason Tony's name was moved into the title itself. Italian artist Valerio Schiti, best known to Marvel readers for his extended run on Brian Michael Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy, was paired with Slott and tasked with conceiving hundreds of new armor designs across the run, with Edgar Delgado handling colors.
