Toyfare: The Toy Magazine #71
In this surreal 2003 issue of Toyfare: The Toy Magazine #71, Spider-Man is drawn into a mind-bending twist when mysterious messages awaken him—only to be met with Morpheus, who offers him a choice between the blue and red pill. After the Hulk takes the red pill and vanishes into the real world, Morpheus reveals the truth: the entire reality is the Toyfare offices, and the staff are the oppressors. With the help of fellow freedom fighters—including the Oracle, Cookie Monster—the resistance wages a guerrilla war against the office staff, culminating in Morpheus’s death and Spider-Man’s reluctant return. Elsewhere, the Hulk has taken over as the new editor. Written by Pat McCallum, Tom Root, Zach Oat, Justin Aclin, Rob Bricken, Adam Patyk, and Jon Gutierrez, this issue blends meta-humor and pop culture chaos in a story that’s as unpredictable as it is delightfully absurd.

Spider-Man is awoken by mysterious messages, but he ignores them. Morpheus arrives to tell him about the Matrix, but he takes the blue pill. Hulk then takes the red pill and is sucked away. Morpheus persists with Spider-Man, knocking over the walls and showing him the real world: the Toyfare offices. He introduces him to the other freedom fighters; then takes him to the Oracle, Cookie Monster. The freedom fighters battle for freedom by sabotaging the Toyfare staff office. The staff kicks them out, Morpheus is killed, and Spider-Man returns. Elsewhere, Hulk is now the new editor.
