The Resolute has found a shoreline in the fog, but it's not Florida. They're lost because their compass has become magnetized and is useless. Eskimos in kayaks are attacking them, because they think they want to hunt their walrus meat. Frumson gets demoted to Cook's Assistant, because he was the one who placed a magnetic hammer under the compass and ruined it. The sea becomes becalmed as they approach the Florida coast and then towards the end of the day, a line squall comes up without any warning and becomes a full gale. The crew has their hands full when they come across a sinking ship.
