"The Story of Saint Gabriel" is a poignant, historically grounded tale from 1963’s Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact #5, a 10-cent comic that offers a rare glimpse into the trials of faith and resilience. Written by Norah Smaridge and brought to life with evocative detail by artist Joe Sinnott—whose inks lend weight to every shadow and struggle—this story follows Father Walsh as he endures the harsh realities of war-torn China, from deadly disease to violent upheaval. The cover by Ray Holloway captures the gravity of the moment, setting the stage for a narrative that’s as much about endurance as it is about spirit.

Civil war breaks out and biplanes attack the city with machine guns and bombs. Roving gangs of bandits attack the village and hundreds of Chinese are massacred or taken for ransom. Father Walsh is taken prisoner for seven days.
