David is a steeplejack who has a close call at work when a ladder breaks underneath him and he is nearly killed. He doesn't tell his wife, but the incident affects his nerves and he has to use drink to brace himself for future climbs. Joy sees the change in her husband and her mother plants the seed that David has been seeing another woman. Meanwhile, a junior executive with the building firm that employs David starts making passes at Joy.
