The first story depicts a conflict between Ralph and Julia, his coworker at an office, when Ralph becomes angry at Julia for going out with a delivery boy instead of him; after an argument about her job caring for old fossils, Ralph realizes he was wrong and that Julia's compassionate nature is what he truly loves, leading him to ask her forgiveness. The second story follows Sandra, who is set up on a date by Jim with his friend Enid; though Jim initially seems indifferent to Sandra, his jealousy emerges when he sees her with Enid, and he ultimately realizes his true feelings for Sandra and wins her back.
In "When Love Is Gone," Julia Worden, down on her luck and searching for glamour, takes a temporary job at an old folks’ home, where she grows frustrated despite developing feelings for her boss, Ralph Drake. When a fire breaks out after she leaves without permission, Ralph fires her—only to later realize her change of heart when she accepts a quiet life caring for the elderly Mallards.
In "Tears for a Memory," Virginia Barton’s devotion to Carl Sherman, a young engineer, leads her to take drastic steps when she believes his talent deserves recognition—pushing his bridge plans forward despite his warnings. When the structure collapses, the consequences unravel their lives, sending Virginia to prison and leaving Carl to face the aftermath. Years later, a new bridge stands as a quiet testament to what might have been, and Virginia, released and changed, finds herself at a crossroads with Carl and the past they both carry.
Enid’s quiet crush on her handsome co-worker Jim takes an unexpected turn when his roommate, Les, arranges a series of double-dates meant to bring them together. As the evenings unfold, Enid finds herself drawn to Jim—only to discover she’s just one more name on his list of fleeting romances. When Les steps in with a surprising offer to help, Enid’s heart begins to shift, leading to a quiet revelation that changes everything.
