Two New Sliders for the State Magic Lanthern #[nn]
In "Two New Sliders for the State Magic Lanthern," Thomas Rowlandson crafts a surreal political allegory where a fox named Charles Fox and a sheep named Lord North navigate a symbolic clash of power and principle. As they stand together on a plinth marked "Power," their journey unfolds through theatrical tableaux—fire, flight, and fall—leading to a mythic reckoning in Hades. With bold, unified art and lettering by Rowlandson, this striking issue blends satire and spectacle in a visually rich, deeply layered narrative.

Charles Fox, as a fox, speaks to the crowd. Lord North, leading sheep, makes an agreement with Fox, leading the 'Westminster geese'. Fox speaks to a crowd in a rotunda, then stokes a fire around a pole topped with the liberty cap and the India charter suspended from it. North and Fox, sharing one coat, stand on a plinth signed "Power." Fox ascends in an air balloon then falls head-down into a "Pitt" (William). They're rejected by the figure of Britannia. This results in their execution, together with Burke. All three end up as mythological sinners in Hades.
