Uncanny Tales #9
In "Like a Chicken without a Head!", a brilliant but ridiculed doctor pushes the limits of medical science with a radical procedure to keep the heart alive after head removal—only to be dismissed by those around him. When he finally acts on his own invention, the moment becomes a chilling act of defiance, leaving him to declare, "The world isn't ready for us." Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Reed Crandall, this eerie 1953 tale from Uncanny Tales #9 blends science fiction and existential dread in a story that’s as unsettling as it is unforgettable. The cover, a striking collaboration by Bill Everett and Sol Brodsky, captures the story’s unsettling tone with bold, dramatic visuals.

A doctor recommends a surgical procedure whereby the head is removed from the body and the heart is kept beating by artificial means so as to lengthen the time available for surgery. No one listens to him though, and being tired of being mocked, he destroys his formula. As he removes his head from his torso, he says to himself "The world isn't ready for us."
