Conan rentre chez lui en Cimmérie pour découvrir que son amour d'enfance, Mala, a été enlevée par un groupe de pilleurs Vanir. Il les poursuit en bateau et tombe sur un bateau avec Vanir et Pictes morts à côté d'une idole sombre. Conan prend l'idole et se dirige vers l'île du Sabre, où Thorfel le Bel est sur le point d'épouser Mala. Mais plutôt que de se donner à Thorfel, Mala se tue. Conan tue Thorfel et reçoit une aide inattendue d'un groupe de Pictes venus sur l'île à la recherche de leur idole noire.
