“My Melancholy Baby”

In "My Melancholy Baby," orphan Joanna finds unexpected warmth in the quiet routines of a flower shop, where a young man’s thoughtful gestures toward his grandmother lead to a surprising connection. As a ball brings them together, Joanna wrestles with her feelings, torn between her humble beginnings and the dream of a life beyond her station. The story unfolds with gentle sincerity, anchored in quiet moments and the quiet hope of something more.

Orphan Joanna gets a job at a flower shop. Tony—the 'man of her dreams'—buys roses. Joanna expects them to be for a beautiful woman, but finds they are for his elderly grandmother, who asks Joanna to stay and read to her. Joanna does it regularly and one night sees Tony fight with his girlfriend, who finds Tom's grandmother creepy and is bored with going to a ball. Mrs Howard arranges for Joanna to go to the ball with her grandson. It is a wonderful evening, but Joanna decides that Tom can never find out she is a poor orphan. Tony tracks her to the florist and professes his love.
