“Hold Me, Hug Me, Rock Me”

In "Hold Me, Hug Me, Rock Me," a chance encounter between Sue and Peter takes a twist when their paths cross again at the new vet’s office—Peter, it turns out, is the vet, and the dog’s illness stems from an unexpected chew toy: a letter he’d sent to Sue. With art by Roy Newby, this 1957 Valentine comic captures a quiet moment of misunderstanding and reunion, all tied up in a dog’s chewed-up confession.

Sue meets Peter when his bicycle almost hits Smokey, her landlady's dog. Peter asks Suer for a date, but when he doesn't show up she is furious and doesn't want to see him again. When Smokey starts feeling bad, Sue takes him to the new vet only to discover that Peter is the new vet. Peter explains that he sent a letter with the change of plans. When Peter escorts Sue home, they discover that the reason Smokey was feeling bad was because he had been chewing on Peter's letter.
