At a dance at Paul's wealthy home, Cleo hears two girls discussing her and saying that Paul must have brought her to the dance "just for a joke". Distraught, Cleo blunders into the ballroom and knocks over a table. But as a couple of the girls whisper snide remarks about her, Paul comes to her defense and lets the guests have it, telling them that Cleo was better than all of them put together. Paul's mother is shocked at her son's words, but his father agrees with him and admires him for standing up for Cleo, recognizing that his son is in love with her.
