In "null," Louis Crandell, a lab assistant to Professor Barringer, becomes invisible after a laboratory accident involving electricity—only his steel prosthetic hand remains visible, drifting through the air. Stricken with a personality shift and delusions of grandeur, he turns to crime in England, using his invisibility to steal and evade capture. His criminal spree leads him to New York, where he threatens the city with a bomb, only to be cornered by military forces and eventually drawn into the world of a gangster, where he begins to question his actions and confront the truth of his own morality.
