Venom #1
This Panini UK Collectors' Edition issue serves as the British reprint gateway to one of the most structurally ambitious chapters in Venom's publishing history: the Al Ewing and Ram V co-written Volume 5, in which Dylan Brock — Eddie's son and a living symbiote codex — steps into the role of Venom for the first time in an ongoing series. The dual-narrative architecture, with Ewing tracking Eddie Brock's cosmic adventures as King in Black while Ram V steered Dylan's street-level superhero awakening, was a genuinely novel storytelling experiment for the franchise. For UK readers on the Panini subscription cycle, this issue was their entry point into that experiment, placing Dylan's transition to Venom host at the centre of a new chapter in the symbiote mythos.

The American source material — Venom (Vol. 5), cover-dated January 2022 and placed on sale by Marvel in November 2021 — was itself the direct successor to Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's transformative four-year run, which had concluded with the King in Black event. Panini UK, operating under a master Marvel reprint licence it has held since 1995, reprinted the material for British readers through its Collectors' Edition line, which packages approximately two to three American strips per issue on a 28-day publishing cycle. The UK Venom #1 therefore represents Panini's editorial decision to launch a dedicated Venom title in their CE lineup at the moment the American series itself was relaunching with a new team and a new lead character.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Reprints content from Marvel's Venom Vol. 5 (2021), written by Al Ewing and Ram V with art by Bryan Hitch — the creative team that succeeded Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman on the title.
- Centres on Dylan Brock as the new Venom host: Dylan, son of Eddie Brock and Anne Weying, was chosen as the next Venom after Eddie ascended to become the King in Black.
- Dylan Brock as a character was originally created by writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman, first appearing in the Venom series as Eddie Brock's son.
- Dylan is described in Marvel's own editorial material as a living symbiote codex — conceived through the symbiote hive-mind's deliberate manipulation — giving him a unique biological bond with the Klyntar.
- The Ewing/Ram V run used a split-narrative structure: Ewing wrote Eddie's cosmic storylines while Ram V focused on Dylan's earth-based superhero beginnings, with both threads designed to converge.
- In Venom (Vol. 5) #1, Dylan's Venom is depicted with the classic white spider chest emblem rather than the dragon emblem from Vol. 4 #35 — a deliberate creative choice by Ram V and Bryan Hitch to signal the diminishing influence of Knull on the symbiotes.
- Ram V earned an Eisner Award nomination for Best Writer, and letterer Clayton Cowles earned a nomination for Best Lettering, for their work on this volume (awards covering 2021-published issues).
- Panini UK's Collectors' Edition line, under which this issue was published, has reprinted American Marvel material for British readers under a master licence held since 1995, typically formatted at approximately 76 pages per issue on a 28-day cycle.
