Veronica #202
Veronica #202 marks a watershed moment not just for Archie Comics but for mainstream American comics as a whole: it introduced Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in the publisher's nearly seven-decade history, into the quintessentially all-American world of Riverdale. The issue's instant sell-out forced Archie to do something it had never done in its entire publication run — order a second printing — demonstrating that readers across demographics were hungry for this kind of representation in a mass-market, newsstand-distributed title. Because Archie Comics occupied a uniquely ubiquitous cultural space (available at supermarket checkouts, airport racks, and hospital gift shops), Kevin's debut carried an outreach far beyond the direct-market comic shop bubble. The character's warm reception opened the door to a solo ongoing series, a GLAAD Award win, a prominent role in the CW's Riverdale television adaptation, and a lasting place in the Archie canon.

The idea for Kevin Keller grew out of a deliberate push by incoming Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater to modernize and diversify Riverdale; writer-artist Dan Parent had actually proposed a gay character years earlier only to have the pitch rejected, but when Goldwater came aboard and called for new characters, Parent pitched Kevin again and was given a green light to design the story himself. The character was announced publicly on April 22, 2010 — months before the September on-sale date — generating national press coverage from outlets including the Washington Post and the New York Times well before a single copy reached shelves. The debut issue, with its cover date of November 2010, was written and drawn by Parent, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios. The original first printing sold out so quickly that Archie issued a special variant second printing with a remastered and recolored cover, available in shops from October 6, 2010 and in limited quantities at that year's New York Comic Con.
