After his ship is torpedoed by the Germans, merchant seaman Archie Gibbs is rescued by a ship that is also torpedoed. Gibbs is picked up by a German submarine. Gibbs makes friends with some of the crew with gifts of cigarettes and after four days is dropped off into the sea near a Venezuelan river boat.
