“Our Modern Weapons Were Invented by Nature”

In "Our Modern Weapons Were Invented by Nature," the Phoenix—a swift ex-rum-runner—gets a secret upgrade: a fluorescent pigment that renders her nearly invisible in the Coral Sea. Renamed the Ghost and commanded by the sharp-witted ex-trader Captain Barnaby, she launches surprise attacks on Japanese shipping. Written by W. B. Carnahan and illustrated by Jim Chambers, with a striking cover by Bob Jenney, this 1942 Dell war tale blends wartime ingenuity with the quiet heroism of the sea.
