Wendy the Good Little Witch was created by artist Steve Muffatti and introduced as a backup feature in Casper the Friendly Ghost #20 (May 1954); after trial appearances in Harvey Hits starting with #7, she accumulated enough reader interest to earn her own ongoing title in August 1960. Issue #4, cover-dated April 1961, falls squarely in that inaugural print run, produced under Harvey's standard assembly-line editorial model in which stories and interior art went largely uncredited — the MyComicShop index lists both writers and artists as unknown for this issue. Warren Kremer, Harvey's prolific art director who pencilled, inked, and colored the vast majority of the publisher's humor-title covers across this era, had defined the visual house style that governed every page of Wendy's book, even when other hands executed the interiors.
