Wetworks #18

Jun 1996 · Image · 2.50 USD; 3.50 CAD

Wetworks #18 (1996) delivers a tense, character-driven thriller as the team is dispatched to a remote mountain town to safeguard a group of enigmatic children. When they’re ambushed by shapeshifting, symbiote-like creatures that mirror their own abilities, the line between enemy and ally blurs—especially when one monster bypasses Jester’s golden armor, revealing a chilling absence beneath. The arrival of the mysterious Blackbird, who returns with the team and forces a reluctant alliance with Waering, adds a layer of intrigue, as his true ties to Pilgrim and his own werewolf nature begin to surface. Written by Francis Takenaga and illustrated by Cedric Nocon, with inks by Chuck Gibson, colors by Mike Rockwitz, and letters by Bill O'Neil, the issue’s cover by Nocon and Gibson captures the tension with sharp, dynamic detail.

Waering sends the Wetworks team to protect a group of special children in a small mountain town. The team is attacked by camouflage monsters who seem to have powers similar to their own symbiotes. When one of the monsters penetrates Jester's golden skin, Dane notices that there is no physical body underneath his armor. The team is assisted by the mysterious Blackbird who returns to home base with them and blackmails Waering into letting him join Wetworks. Blackbird turns out to be, not only Pilgrim's brother but also a werewolf like Waering and his tribe.
