“What If Daredevil Had Killed the Kingpin?”

In *What If...? #2* (1989), a chilling alternate path unfolds when Matt Murdock finally kills the Kingpin—only to spiral into a breakdown that leads him to confront the man’s son, Richard Fisk. With the stakes higher than ever, a brutal clash with the Hobgoblin ends in tragedy for both Matt and Ned, setting Richard on a new, darker course. Written by Danny Fingeroth and brought to life by Greg Capullo’s striking art, with inks by Ian Akin and Brian Garvey, and colors by Evelyn Stein, the issue’s cover by Keith Pollard captures the weight of that fateful decision.

After the Kingpin ruins his life, Matt kills him. Having a psychotic break after the murder, Matt shows up on the doorstep of Richard Fisk to let the Kingpin's son pass judgment on him. Hobgoblin and his goons interrupt the confrontation and both Matt and Ned are killed in the battle. Richard gives up being the Rose and dons a more familiar crimefighting costume.
